Homemade Sweet and Spicy Pretzel Mix Recipe

The perfect Sweet and Spicy Pretzel Mix: a quick, crunchy snack made from an assortment of tiny pretzels, Rice Chex, pecans and blanched almonds, coated in maple syrup, brown sugar and a touch of spice. Ready in about 10 minutes of active work—ideal for holiday gifts, party bowls, or everyday snacking.

Sweet and Spicy Pretzel Mix - finished snack in bowl

After a stretch of rich meals and elaborate sides, this simple snack felt like the perfect change of pace. It’s salty, sweet and finishes with a subtle heat—thanks to a pinch of cayenne pepper—which gives the mix a lively kick without overwhelming the other flavors. If you prefer no heat (for kids or sensitive eaters), omit the cayenne and the snack will still be delicious.

The base is tiny unsalted pretzels, Rice Chex cereal, pecans and blanched almonds. Everything is tossed with a little butter and pure maple syrup, then sprinkled with a brown sugar mixture seasoned with fresh thyme, cinnamon and salt. When baked briefly, the coating caramelizes and creates a lightly crisp, irresistible coating on each piece.

This mix is great in a large bowl for parties, portioned into mason jars for holiday giving, or kept in an airtight container for weekday snacking. It keeps well and is a nice alternative to store-bought snack mixes when you want homemade flavor with minimal effort.

Sweet and Spicy Pretzel Mix

A crunchy, sweet-and-spicy snack made with pretzels, Rice Chex, pecans and blanched almonds. Quick to prepare and perfect for gifting or entertaining.

Prep Time: 5 mins  |
Cook Time: 10 mins  |
Total Time: 15 mins  |
Servings: 16 (about 1/3 cup per serving)

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp light brown sugar
  • 2 tsp fresh thyme, chopped (divided)
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 cup pecans
  • 1/2 cup blanched almonds (see blanching instructions below)
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp butter
  • 3 cups tiny unsalted pretzels
  • 1 cup Rice Chex cereal
  • 2 Tbsp pure maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, 1 tsp of the chopped thyme, salt, cinnamon and cayenne pepper. Set this sugar-spice mix aside.
  3. To blanch the almonds: place the almonds in a small bowl and pour boiling water over them so the water just covers the tops. Let the almonds sit, covered, for one minute (no longer). Drain, rinse under cold water, and slip off the skins—this is easiest when the nuts are still slightly warm.
  4. Spread the blanched almonds and pecans on a baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes at 350°F until lightly toasted and fragrant. Keep an eye on them so they don’t brown too much.
  5. Remove the baking sheet with the nuts from the oven. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the warm nuts with the butter so it melts into them. Gently fold in the pretzels, Rice Chex and maple syrup until everything is evenly coated.
  6. Sprinkle the reserved brown sugar mixture evenly over the pretzel mixture, tossing gently to coat all pieces.
  7. Spread the coated mixture in a single layer on the baking sheet and return to the oven. Bake at 350°F for about 10 minutes, stirring once halfway through to ensure even baking and caramelization.
  8. Remove from the oven, sprinkle with the remaining teaspoon of fresh thyme, and allow the mix to cool completely on the baking sheet. The coating will crisp as it cools. Break apart any large clusters before serving.

Storage & Tips

  • Store cooled mix in an airtight container at room temperature. It will stay fresh for several days and is convenient for grab-and-go snacking.
  • If you don’t want heat, simply omit the cayenne. For a different spice profile, try a pinch of smoked paprika instead.
  • Use pure maple syrup for best flavor; lighter syrups will produce a milder caramel coating.
  • When blanching almonds, don’t exceed the one-minute hot soak—over-soaking makes the skins harder to remove.

Variations

  • Swap pecans for walnuts or cashews if you prefer a different nut flavor or have pecan allergies.
  • Try mini bagel chips or other small crackers in place of pretzels for a saltier base.
  • Add a handful of dried cranberries or chocolate chips after the mix cools for a sweet contrast.
